Don't mistake a beehive for a wasp nest
One of the most common — and most harmful — mistakes in NZ pest control is destroying a beehive thinking it's a wasp nest. Honey bees are protected, valuable and essential. Here's how to tell the difference and do the right thing.
Wasp nests
- Look: grey/papery ball, often underground or in walls, eaves or trees.
- Sound: loud buzzing, aggressive guards.
- Activity: wasps fly in fast and direct.
- Action: trap and deter; call a pro for large nests.
Bee hives / swarms
- Look: wax comb, amber/golden, often in a cluster on a branch (swarm) or in a managed hive.
- Sound: steady hum, not aggressive unless provoked.
- Activity: bees move in a calm, organised flow.
- Action: do not destroy. Contact a local beekeeper — they'll relocate it free.
The golden rule
