Fungus Gnats
Tiny black flies around your houseplants — beat them for good.

Fungus gnats are the little black "fruit-fly look-alikes" that hover around your indoor plants. The adults are mostly a nuisance, but their larvae live in the potting mix and chew plant roots — which can stunt seedlings and weaken houseplants.
They thrive in damp, peaty mix, so the fix is watering less and trapping the flying adults before they lay more eggs.

How to identify fungus gnats
Smaller and darker than a fruit fly, with long legs and a mosquito-like darting flight close to the soil surface.
- •Tiny dark flies, 2–4 mm, hovering over potting mix.
- •Larvae are translucent white threads with black heads in the soil.
- •Plants may show yellowing leaves or stunted growth.
Are fungus gnats harmful?
Adults don't bite or spread disease. The larvae feed on roots and can seriously damage seedlings, cuttings, and stressed plants — mature plants usually tolerate them.
Life cycle
Females lay eggs in damp soil; larvae feed on fungi and roots for about two weeks, then pupate and emerge as adults. The cycle runs 3–4 weeks, and several generations overlap indoors all year.
Fun fact: Adult fungus gnats live only about a week — but a single female can lay 200+ eggs in that time.
What they feed on
Larvae eat fungi and decaying organic matter in wet soil, plus tender roots. Adults barely feed — they exist to mate and lay eggs.
How to get rid of fungus gnats
Dry out the breeding ground and trap the flyers.
Remove the attraction
- ✓Let the top few centimetres of potting mix dry between waterings.
- ✓Remove dead leaves and debris from the soil surface.
- ✓Avoid over-watering — use pots with good drainage.
- ✓Repot in fresh, well-draining mix if the old mix stays soggy.
Block them out
- ✓Yellow sticky traps near plants catch the adults.
- ✓Bottom-water plants so the surface stays drier.
- ✓Quarantine new plants for a couple of weeks.
- ✓A shallow GotchaPest fruit-fly trap with cider vinegar bait catches stray adults.
