Mosquitoes in New Zealand: Backyard Control That Actually Works

Mosquitoes and sandflies are the flies New Zealanders love to hate. They're not just itchy — they disrupt sleep, ruin a backyard BBQ, and in some regions they're a near-constant presence from dusk. The good news is our native mosquitoes aren't the malaria vectors you'd worry about overseas, but they absolutely carry nuisance bites and the occasional infection. Here's how to dial down the buzzing this summer.

The mosquito situation in New Zealand

NZ has around 16 mosquito species, of which about a dozen are native and the rest introduced. The most common backyard biter is the southern house mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus), joined in many regions by Aedes notoscriptus, the daytime biter that breeds in containers. The saltmarsh mosquito causes real grief in coastal spots, and the sandfly (technically a biting midge, Austrosimulium) is the scourge of the West Coast and Fiordland.

Why mosquitoes breed in your backyard

Mosquitoes need standing water to lay eggs and for larvae to develop — even small amounts. A bucket left in the rain, a blocked gutter, a tarpaulin dip, a plant saucer, a forgotten wheelbarrow, an unsealed rainwater tank, or a clogged drain all qualify. A female can lay hundreds of eggs, and the whole cycle can complete in a week of warm weather. Remove the water and you remove the mosquitoes.

How to mosquito-proof your section

Empty the breeding sites

• Tip out, scrub and dry anything that holds water — buckets, toys, tarps, wheelbarrows, plant trays — at least weekly.
• Clear gutters and downpipe blockages; leaf litter traps water invisibly.
• Drill drainage holes in tyre swings, planter boxes and trampoline frames.
• Keep rainwater tanks fully sealed with fine mesh over inlets and overflow.
• Refresh pet water and birdbaths every couple of days.

Reduce adult resting spots

Mosquitoes rest in long grass, dense shrubs and damp shaded corners during the day. Trimming vegetation and improving airflow around the deck genuinely reduces evening buzz density.

Personal protection that actually works

• Repellent: DEET, picaridin or oil-of-lemon-eucalyptus formulations are the proven options. Apply to exposed skin before dusk.
• Clothing: long, loose, light-coloured sleeves and trousers dramatically reduce bites.
• Screens: fly screens on bedroom windows are the single best investment for sleep. Repair tears promptly.
• Timing: most NZ backyard biters peak at dawn and dusk — plan around it when you can.
