The NZ wasp calendar
Wasp season in New Zealand follows a predictable arc. Knowing it lets you prepare before wasps become a problem — which is far easier than fighting them mid-summer.
Spring (Sep–Nov): queens emerge
Overwintered queens emerge and start new nests. This is the best time to trap queens — one queen caught now is thousands fewer wasps later.
Early summer (Dec): nests grow
Worker wasps appear. Set bee-safe wasp traps around patios and gardens now.
Peak (Jan–Mar): maximum numbers
This is when wasps are most aggressive and stings spike. Refresh bait weekly and keep traps between nests and people.
Autumn (Apr–May): wasps go sugar-crazy
Nests die off and workers forage aggressively for sugar. Switch bait from protein to sugar (see our bait guide).
